The Road by Cormac McCarthy is the best book I’ve read this year. The first book in ages to make me cry. God, I couldn’t recommend reading it more highly. There are a few verses I even considered getting tattooed on myself, it is so poetic. So if you are between books and haven’t read any McCarthy, this a good place to start. He also wrote No Country for Old Men which was a great Western style novel, and I’m sure most of you have seethe great movie adaptation with Josh Brolin and Javier Bardem.
After viewing this trailer I know they made a lot of changes to make the film more marketable. I only hope they left the essence the same, and didn’t make it a dumbed down action movie. I respect the author, and I respect Viggo Mortensen, and don’t think he would be part of a project that sullied such a fine piece of literature. So I am still looking forward to the film. The stills I have seen look good.
If you have read this, how much to you think McCarthy took from Waiting for Godot by Samuel Beckett? The repetitive dialog and blasted wastelands often made me recall that existential play. With the same sad haunted magic you could almost imagine the father and son from The Road crossing paths with Gogo and Didi two other lost souls waiting for God or something unknown in the heath.
